We made it through the SAG-AFTRA strike, and the industry is buzzing with excitement. Our mission remains focused on training students to achieve success in film acting. While acting is our primary focus, we also offer workshops in voice, screenwriting, and comedy to cater to our students’ diverse interests.
Last year, our students showcased their talents by performing stand-up routines, singing, and writing full screenplays under the guidance of our guest coaches. It’s amazing to see raw potential transform into skilled talent with the right coaching, focus, and hard work.
Our casting department is growing, too. We continue to serve as a training facility, including mentoring a Casting Director-in-Training. Last fall, we were involved in casting for the Indigenous-led, Winnipeg-based production Aberdeen, and we’re now working hard on another local project. It’s truly an honor to support local filmmakers and witness the incredible talent our province has to offer.
The importance of training cannot be overstated. As with any craft, practice makes permanence. We work with students not only to improve their acting skills but also to help them manage nerves and become comfortable in various settings—whether in an audition room, in front of a camera, or performing for an audience. The world of film can be intimidating and nerve-wracking, but learning to navigate these challenges is a continuous process.
Once our students learn to manage their nerves and become comfortable, that’s when the magic happens. The beauty of a performance lies not just in the words on the page but in the spirit and energy the actor brings to life. An actor is just one part of a production, but when they are confident and comfortable on screen, the entire production comes alive.
Acting is a craft for all ages. We have students as young as eight and others who have retired from their “first careers.” It’s a blessing to see people from all walks of life finding a sense of community within our studio. The pursuit of professional acting is often a long journey—it’s a business, a craft, and can be incredibly life-giving.
Looking ahead, Onalee Ames Film Studio is planning to become even more involved in our surrounding neighborhoods. We hope to bring film into the community in various ways, so stay tuned! As always, we look forward to hearing from anyone interested in pursuing a career in film.
